A Muslim's Character and Behaviour

By: Abid Syed

Every Muslim should have a character and behavior like how Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala told us to have in the Qur'an and how Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alayhi wa Sallam told and showed us.

Every Muslim should have a good character and behavior, so other people who are non-Muslims can appreciate it and see how good Muslims are. A Muslim should be clean because cleanliness is half of faith.

Muslims should pray five times a day, be helpful to neighbors, give zakat to the poor, have a good posture and manner and fast during the month of Ramadan. Muslims should also be humble, polite, kind and caring and they should share their values and wealth among fellow human beings, and love one another.

We should say As-salamu-'alaikum to other Muslims. When we join a group of people already sitting down we should say As-salamu-'alaikum. When we meet elders we should say As-salamu-'alaikum. We shouldn't greet someone who is reciting the Qur'an because we don't want to disturb him.

Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alaihi wa Sallam said a lot of Hadeeth and gave us a lot of examples on how a Muslim's behavior should be. He once said: "The blessing of food is (received by) washing (the hands) before and washing (the hands) after (taking) it." He used to eat with three fingers, and he licked them before he wiped them. He forbade breathing into a vessel container. The Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa Sallam also said: "Do not drink in one gulp like the drinking of a camel." In another Hadeeth, Allah's Messenger said: "Do not hate each other" and "Do not spy upon people."

A Muslim should say this dua when he enters the washroom: "Allahumma innee a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khabaaith" meaning- "O Allah, I seek refuge in you from all kinds of evil," and when he comes out of the washroom he should say: "ghufraanak" which means: "( I seek) Your forgiveness." Before a Muslim eats he should say " Bismillahi wa 'alaa barkatillah", and after he is done eating he must recite, "Al- Hamdu Lillahilladhee at-amanaa wa saqaanaa wa ja'alanaa minal Muslimeen."

You should recite Bismillah at various times like when you are going to recite the Qur'an, before you shut the doors of your house, before you take your medicine, before you board a vehicle, before you eat, when you wake up, when you sleep, before you recite a dua and many other times.

Another characteristic that should be in a Muslim is to respect his parents and the elderly. You shouldn't disrespect them, talk to them in a high voice, talk back to them or disobey them.

I hope you got some information on how a Muslim's character and behavior should be like. If you have the character and behavior of a true Muslim, may Allah give you the reward of Jannah, Insha Allah.
