A DICTIONARY OF ISLĀM

FOR THE LOVE OF ALLĀH

QĀMŪS AL-ISLĀM FĪ HUBBILLĀH
Subhānahū wa Ta‘ālā

G is for Ghufrān

Ghadīr Khumm
the pond or pool of Khumm situated between Makka and Madīna where the Holy Prophet Muhammad Sallallāhu alayhi wa Sallam said after his Farewell Pilgrimage: “Whoever has me as his patron (mawlā), has (Sayyidinā) Alī (Rady Allāhu Anhu) as his patron”. On hearing this, Sayyidinā ‘Umar Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu congratulated Sayyidinā ‘Alī Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu. This shows the deep love that the Companions of the beloved Prophet Muhammad Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam had for him as well as for each other. Sayyidinā ‘Alī Rady Allāhu ‘Anhu occupies pride of place in the heart of every Muslim because of this event of Ghadīr Khumm as well as because he was a member of the Beloved Prophet’s Household and his fourth Khalīfa

ghadab
anger. A truly brave person is one who can control his anger. A sahābī (Companion) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa Sallam asked him three times to give him some advice and each time, he advised him to control his anger

ghaddār
perfidious, treacherous. May Allāh Subhānahū wa Ta‘ālā save all the Muslims from the machinations of open enemies as well as traitors. Āmīn

He is the most universally acclaimed saint of all times who converted thousands of Jews and Christians to Islām and transformed the lives of thousands of Muslims by turning them to goodness and piety. Alhamdu Lillāh!

the washing of the whole body required after sexual intercourse or a seminal emission, at the end of menstruation and when bleeding stops after childbirth. Ghusl is undertaken to regain ritual purity.
The dead person is also given ghusl before burial. At that time, Muslims supplicate to Allāh who is al-Ghafūr (The Forgiving), al-Ghaffār (The Forgiver) and al-Ghāfir (The Forgiver), to forgive all the Muslims, men and women, and especially the one who has passed away.
To do ghusl while one is in a state of ritual purity, is not wājib (a requirement) but a Sunnah (a noble and meritorious Prophetic tradition), for example, doing ghusl for Friday prayers
